Legal Document Assistants

What is a Legal Document Assistant (LDA)?

An LDA is not an attorney and can not provide you with any legal advice or represent you in court. However, they are experienced professionals who are authorized to prepare legal documents

LDAs have the same educational background as a paralegal and are REQUIRED by law to be registered and bonded in the county in which they have their principal place of business.

What can a Legal Document Assistant handle?

An LDA can provide assistance with routine legal tasks, such as typing and filing out the legal paperwork for uncontested divorces, bankruptcies, wills, and other types of legal documents. AnLDA can not make suggestions or choose the form for you.

An experienced LDA can help you avoid the pitfalls and also make sure every important detail on a form is accounted for.

How do I find a Legal Document Assistant?

  1. You can look through the Telephone Book's Yellow Pages under the "Legal Document Assistant" section.
  2. Ask a friend for a recommendation.
  3. Go to the California Legal Document Assistant Association Member Locator to find a LDA in your area. http://www.calda.org/Search.asp.

The Cuesta College Paralegal Program is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to become a successful paralegal.  A paralegal is a trained specialist who performs a wide variety of legal tasks, including legal research, law office management, and preparation of various legal documents.

The primary goal of the Cuesta College Paralegal Program is to offer you a comprehensive program to learn paralegal skills that will prepare you for a variety of different job opportunities, including employment in private law offices, governmental agencies, and businesses where paralegal skills are desirable.

The Cuesta College Paralegal Program has been approved by the California Community College Chancellor's Office and satisfies the requirements of the California Business and Professions Code for both paralegals and legal document assistants. The Program is also designed to help students prepare for NALA (National Association of Legal Assistants) certification.

All paralegal courses are taught by highly regarded attorneys, paralegals, and professionals in the legal field. Successful completion of the paralegal courses plus the required general education courses earns you a Paralegal Associate in Arts Degree.  Alternatively, you can earn a Paralegal Certificate of Proficiency by successfully completing the paralegal courses minus the general education courses.
